The EU is leading the world in the urgent fight against climate change. On Wednesday the European Commission laid out in broad terms how it intends to meet its objective of no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. No other advanced economy has taken such a sweeping step. Ursula von der Leyen, the commission’s new president, likened her mission to “Europe’s man on the moon moment”.
