Houston — After becoming the world’s first industry sector to agree to a market-based measure to tackle its carbon footprint, the airline industry is continuing to collectively ramp up its efforts to sustain its commitments to sustainability.
The aviation industry is the first sector to agree to global climate change mitigation efforts, with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) outlining airlines’ goal for carbon-neutral growth beginning in 2020.
Adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization in 2016 to halve the level of emissions produced in 2005 by 2050, CORSIA was developed with the intent of closing the gap between the industry’s aspirations and actuality. In its most recent step toward maintaining its commitments, many airlines will now report their carbon emissions on an annual basis as of January 2019.
