A new regulation has been published by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment of Switzerland (FOEN), which affects several European air operators.
This new “The Ordinance on the Acquisition and Reporting of Tonne-Kilometre Data Relating to Distances Covered by Aircraft “, which entered into force on July 1, 2017, aims to integrate greenhouse gas emissions from the aviation sector into the emissions trading scheme.
The agreement on the link between the two Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS) was initialed by Switzerland and the European Union (EU) in January 2016. Once it has been signed and ratified by both parties, it will enable Swiss companies to access a larger market and benefit from the same competition conditions as its EU counterparts.
The new Ordinance is a regulation that follows the same line as the European Union, so only domestic flights in Switzerland or flights departing from Switzerland to a state of the European Economic Area (EEA) will be included.
